DAY 1: HANOI TO THON THA VILLAGE
On our first day, we escape the buzz of Hanoi and dive headfirst into the stark contrast of Ha Giang. After a refreshing break at the Tay traditional bungalow in Thon Tha village, a small village of about 500 people just outside the main centre. YESD has been working with the community here for several years to help elevate the quality of the homestays, provide hospitality training, and implement responsible tourism practices. We didn’t encounter any other tourists during our stay; we felt like we had ventured off the beaten track. It was the perfect start to our time in Ha Giang.

DAY 2: THON THA - TWIN MOUNTAIN - SKYPATH - DONG VAN
As we depart from Thon Tha and head towards Quan Ba Heaven Gate, a hidden village unveils itself next, draped in the living culture of the Flower H'mong people. At the Lung Tam linen cooperative, threads weave a beautiful dance, creating intricate embroideries that are nothing short of poetry in motion.
Ascending Ma Pi Leng pass and scaling the pulse of Vietnam. The northward vista opens like an amphitheatre of rugged wilderness. A precipice greets us alongside the road, introducing the cool, calming allure of Nho Que River flowing beneath, lacing a ribbon of life across the land.
After a short hike to Skypath, we found ourselves cocooned within the gentle purr of our vehicle, meandering through the veins of the Ha Giang province, bound for the east and the town of Dong Van. As we left the familiar behind, the landscapes undertook a transformation from rice paddies and undulating tea fields into a tapestry of surreal limestone peaks the colour of fading charcoal sketches and rugged canyons.
This was our welcome to the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO-sanctified geopark with a prestige larger than life itself.

DAY 3: DONG VAN - KING PALACE - PHO CAO - CAVE - NAM DAM
As day three greets us with its gentle embrace, our morning begins at a unique piece of history, the palace of the H'mong King. Once the dwelling of Vuong Chinh Duc, an influential and powerful leader, this palace holds an intriguing blend of architectural styles.
We then move on to Lao Xa, an ancient village with traditional homes belonging to the H'mong and Hoa people that stand the test of time. We marvel at these dwellings' simple yet rich atmosphere. The fact that Ha Giang remains one of Vietnam's poorest provinces adds a layer of understanding and a desire to connect more deeply with its inhabitants.
With the pensive reflections of Lao Xa still alive in our minds, our wheels roll towards another local marvel. Here, nature’s hidden gem awaits our discovery - the cavernous wonder of Lung Khuy Cave.
Located about 2 kilometres from Old Quan Ba’s mystical pass, this cave is the perfect symphony of earth and elements. Unlike other caves shrouded and made inscrutable by hills, Lung Khuy invites one and all, eagerly revealing its cloak to the traveller's eye.
The cave mirrors life, its labyrinthine expanse a testament to nature's intricacy and the quiet beauty tucked away from the beaten path.
We reflect on another day's beautiful memories as we approach Nam Dam Village. Checking into the bungalow for the night.
DAY 4: NAM DAM MORNING MARKET - HANOI
Perfect end to our Ha Giang loop with a vibrant canvas of a Quan Ba Sunday morning market, the pulse of the community. Locals from near and far convened upon the heart of the morning market, draped in their traditional finery, transforming a simple weekly gathering into a wondrous carnival of colour and culture. Each corner of this bustling bazaar seemed alive with the hues of unique ethnic garments, the heartbeat of a people intricately woven into the very fabric.
Wandering through the twisting lanes of this technicolor dream, we became a silent witness to the intrinsic beauty of the Hmong, Dao, Giay, and Nung cultures. Time ceased to exist as we fully immersed ourselves in the sights, sounds, and scents of the market. The rustic stalls overflowed with an abundance of fresh produce, as if reaching out to visitors, beckoning curiosity and appreciation. Beyond these vibrant fruits and vegetables, handmade textiles and agricultural supplies completed the melange of piquant offerings.
The morning market is a cherished remnant of Northern Vietnam's heartbeat, now onto our 380km journey back to Hanoi town!

As we bid farewell to our five resplendent days and four amber-hued nights in Ha Giang, we carry with us a tune of endless wonders. The whispers of the H'mong King’s Palace, the raw vibrancy of the Quan Ba morning market, the tales of Lao Xa and the embrace of Lung Khuy Cave, all resonated a symphony of adventures. This land, with its rugged beauty and resilient pulse, has silently woven itself into the fabric of our hearts. 10 Days Road trip from Gold Coast to Great Barrier Reef (Cairns)
A 10 days (1,847km) road trip from Gold Coast to Cairns; A state nearly five times the size of Japan, seven times the size of Great Britain, and two and a half times the size of Texas! Okay! You get the picture! It's humungous! I have always been in awe of the fascination of blue planet, diving in the Great Barrier Reef has been on my bucket list since. And what's better than rubber tramping across the second largest state in Australia - Queensland from Gold Coast to the Great Barrier Reef! I went through the journey and learn it the hard way - inaccurate information, out dated details, took a bad advise from forum; Hence, I've decided to put this road trip into a travel piece that might help you.

One of the main misconceptions about the Great Barrier Reef is that it is close to everything in Queensland. No, that's not the case, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is quite a distance from Gold Coast. GBR starts off at the Queensland's coastline just north of Bundaberg and runs north to the tip of Cape York about 2,300km. Bundaberg is about 6 hours drive, Whitsundays about 15 hours and Cairns/Port Douglas will take you approximately 24 hours of driving! The usual pictures of GBR on postcard or brochure are mainly from Whitsundays Islands (main areas include Mackay, Airlie Beach, Proserpine) and the Outer Reef off Cairns and Port Douglas. There are also some islands you can travel and spend a night at, Green Island, Lady Heron Island or Fitzroy Island - where you can snorkel right off the beach.

GOLD COAST
Gold Coast skyline dominated with towering developments, a place with plentiful to offer - varies from national parks, sandy beaches, theme parks, water activities to shopping! If you're not in hurry and a fan of theme park, I would recommend a 3 nights stay at Gold Coast, here's a good 3 days itinerary. We've pre-booked our rental car on the next day, hence we only get to spend a good one and a half day at Gold Coast. Here's our journey; started the day earlier at 630am, craving for a sumptuous breakfast, walk from our hostel to the Surfers Paradise's esplanade (Cavill Avenue) and realised most of the restaurants open only at 8 or 9am. BUMMER! The choices are scarce, we ended up walking back from Surfers Paradise towards the direction of our hostel where we passed by a breakfast joint earlier, so if you're up early, Chickery Chick is probably your only choice (or make your own breakfast!).
After breakfast, we took a UBER towards Mermaid Beach and try a Mini Golf at Putt Putt Golf (appox. 2 hour); Walk over and chill at Pacific Fair for lunch (approx. 1 hour); Head over to Broadbeach, indulged ourselves with Max Brenner's awesome chocolate! (read a book and chill as long as you want). We took a stroll back (you also can take the train) to Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets, wait for sunset and had our dinner at the Hurricane's Surfers Paradise.
Places of interest: Surfers Paradise, Q1 Observation Tower, Broadbeach (al-fresco cafe), Mermaid Beach, Burleigh Heads (surfing), Tamborine Rainforest, Curumbin Wildlife, Theme Parks, Whale Watching.
Photography Tips: Towering Cityscape, Street Photography along the central district and coast. Architecture patterns, leading lines of high-rise buildings and interesting subjects along the street or beach. You'll be able to see sunrise from the sea horizon, check the timing for local sunrise, and dress warm.
Was following a couple walking towards the beach, the wooden handrail created a frame leads towards the mass subject; suddenly an Australian White Ibis flew in and rested on the handrail, quickly re-frame my shot and captured this candid moment.
Surveillance tower strategy was initiated back in the days of 1989 for Gold Coast's long stretches of ocean beaches. There are currently 39 specially designed towers, which are numbered and strategically placed along the 60km coastal strip.

A fan of chocolate or not, Max Brenner is a must try! Dark Chocolate - Suckao Experience, it served in a wooden tray, and melt your own chocolate buttons in a little cup warmed up with tealight candle. The spoon also acts as a straw so you can stir in the chocolate buttons and drink up. Suck - to draw the dense liquid through the metal straw and Kakao - the Spanish word for cocoa beans from pure chocolate drink.

Surfers Paradise is like a cradle to Gold Coast's finest busking and street performance - the epicentre of Queensland's street performing culture. They even host a yearly street entertainment championship at Surfers Paradise.
The next morning, i head out at 4.30am to catch the twilight before sunrise. Flock of Silver Gulls formed a visual mass in the foreground, the shoreline shaped a leading line in the mid-ground, the signature towering skyline defined the background of Gold Coast and reflected.
Managed to catch the sunrise at 5.18am.

SUNSHINE COAST
Our first stop, two and a half hour drive from Gold Coast to Sunshine Coast. We head straight to Noosa, a little surf town on the Sunshine Coast, it stretches from Caloundra all the way up to Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park. Noosa is the perfect addition to our road trip, it offered our first sighting of Australia's wildlife in their natural habitat! We did the coastal route within the park, if you're at the right time of year - whale and dolphin sightings aren't uncommon. There are a lots of bays and benches to take rest along the way so do pack in water, snacks, and swimmers if you fancy a dip.
Places of Interest: Noosa National Park, Sunshine beach, Maroochydore (urban centre of Sunshine Coast), Fraser Island.
Photography Tips: There are several lookout points where you'll be able to see sunset from Noosa National Park, take a beer, picnic and enjoy the gorgeous view. Lookout for wildlife, whale, dolphin, koalas, python and turkey?

GLADSTONE
Planning for a road trip from Gold Coast to Great Barrier Reef is exceptionally time consuming, no thanks to the overwhelming but outdated travel information. We had heeded the advice from 2 different internet sources (Trippy.com & a random blog) where both highly recommended a night stay at Ban Ban Springs. It's just a 2-hour drive from Sunshine Coast to Ban Ban Springs, thus we have spent our morning longer at Maroochydore and hit our road slightly late. When we got to Ban Ban Springs, it wasn't a town as we were expecting but a small sacred site for Wakka Wakka indigenous people, a tree and a rest house located at the junction of Burnett and Isis Highways. You can't really spend a night here, not unless you're traveling with campervan. I should've known the advice sounded fishy for not being able to find a single Airbnb listing at Ban Ban Springs. We had to re-arrange our itinerary for the day, tried our phones but limited EDGE services at Ban Ban Springs. Wing it and drive to whichever town sign come up along the way. Stopped by Gin Gin for lunch and re-arrange our destination and the town to spend the night at.
Places of Interest: Woolonga, Gin Gin, Tannum Sands, Gladstone Memorial Park, Gladstone Fish Market, Gladstone City Centre
Photography Tips: If you're like most photographers, you try to avoid lens flare, and when you have that senior moment, you probably just delete the photo and grieve. I like lens flare and embrace it. Here are some tips in getting a soft lens flare; the best time to get a moderate lens flare is within half an hour after sunrise or half an hour before sunset. Mount on a prime lens, remove your lens hood, switch to the largest aperture, high shutter speed, point your camera direct into the sun, let there be light.

Gladstone Fish Market retails opens as early as 8.30am on the weekdays; but the food van (Hot Box) only opens from 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm. Good reviews on the food van's fish and chips, gutted we were unable to try it.
We got the fresh oysters and cooked prawns from the market retails for breakfast, super fresh and delicious!
ROCKHAMPTON
The journey from Gladstone to Rockhampton was an easy 1.5 hrs ride. However, in Australia everything seem just a little bit more; animals are cuter, insects are deadlier and somehow the roads are longer and boring-er even for a 1.5 hrs drive. Queensland government has erected trivia signs in fatigue zones to keep drivers alert and reduce crashes and fatalities; Floral emblem of Queensland, first premier of Queensland, how long to go mum? The trivia keeps us entertained all the way to Rockhampton! Rockhampton or Rocky is a charming town with a historical architectural streetscape, we went right to the city centre, parked our car at Quay Street and strolled along the CBD grid.
Places of Interest: Botanic Gardens, Heritage Village, Quay Street, Dreamtime Culture Centre, Rockhampton Art Gallery, Mt. Archer (if you have enough time)
Photography Tips: Less is more, a minimalist technique characterised by spareness and simplicity. Before framing the shot, use simple lines, geometric patterns, strong shadows, contrasting colors or lone subject, decide what to leave out of the frame to make stronger image.
We were supposed to visit the heritage village, and saw this along way. We have extremely limited choice in dogs' supplies back home in Malaysia, so we decided to take quick pit stop to get something for our dog. Then we saw another pet store after Pet Barn, we ended up visiting a lot of pet shops at Rockhampton. Our dog is a happy dog.

MACKAY
Mackay is a vibrant exciting tropical city, booming from richness of sugar and mining. Early pioneers brought sugar cane to the region and began an industry of Queensland's largest sugar producing town. A destination that brings nature to life, from beach-lounging kangaroos, wallabies at Cape Hillsborough National Park and elusive platypus at Eungella National Park. Here, we got our first glimpse of the Great Barrier Reef from the Airlie Beach - a gateway to Whitsundays, is just one in a half hour drive from Mackay town. We booked a private studio by the beach from Airbnb, definitely one of the best Airbnb during our trip at Queensland. Our Airbnb is 15 minutes away from main town, where we drive through a scenic jaunt past the sugar-cane fields to our studio by the beach.
Places of Interest: Cape Hillsborough National Park, Eungella National Park, Airlie Beach, Whitsundays (Great Barrier Reef)
Photography Tips: McEwens Beach at Mackay is the perfect location to see Milkyway, set your camera to Manual, turn to the largest aperture your wide lens can go, start with ISO3200, and follow the shutter 500 Rules to guesstimate your shutter speed (500/lens focal length); for example, i was using a 20mm lens, my optimal shutter speed will 500/20=25 seconds.
Rockhampton to Mackay is one of the most boring 3.5 hrs drive. Take a rest if tired, survive this drive, you're a hero!
Again, there are online tips recommended a stop for bites at Clairview (2.5hrs from Rockhampton), ignore that, go a little further from Clairview, take a bite and stretch your legs at Flaggy Rock Cafe. A total life saver! There's hardly any cafe or restaurant along the journey from Rockhampton to Mackay, Flaggy Rock Cafe located on the right side if you're driving from Rockhampton to Mackay, worth the rest.

Lamberts Lookout perched above Lamberts Beach provides an excellent vantage point to view the spectacular coastline, including passing whales during migration season.

Cape Hillsborough National Park is about 45 minutes away from Mackay, it might seem a bit daunting once you've arrived at the entrance due to the darkness, drive all the way to the end of the park, you can park in front of Cape Hillsborough Resort and Mackay Caravan Parks. Then just make your way towards the beach.
Make sure to arrive at Cape Hillsborough before sunrise, the park ranger starts his briefing about the park and the wildlife, then feed the wild wallabies and kangaroos right after that.

Sunrise at Cape Hillsborough is around 5.15am (double check sunrise time), i'd suggest to leave the national park before 6.45am if possible. Start your journey to Eungella National Park (look up for "Platypus Lodge Restaurant"), it'll take 1.5 hrs, get there before 8.30am will be ideal. This is because Platypus' active time is from 7am to 9am, and you don't want to miss that.
There wasn't any information about platypus' active time; we actually got to Eungella National Park (Platypus Lodge Restaurant) at 9.30am, we were so lucky the instant we arrived at the viewing platform, an elusive platypus emerged!

TOWNSVILLE
Tucked between Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) and Cairns, Townsville is the perfect mix of urban jungle and scenic nature. A major gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, the wet tropics and the Queensland outback, a vibrant city sitting around the Castle Hill.
Places of Interest: Castle Hill, Breakfast at Sandwich Express (town centre), Brunch at Jam Corner, Magnetic Island, Reef HQ Aquarium, Wallaman Falls (2.5 hrs drive from Townsville).
Photography Tips: To avoid aquarium distortion, fix on a shorter telephoto lens (85mm or above) to isolate your subject. Place your camera parallel to the glass wall of the tank. Turn off on-camera flash to prevent reflections. Focus on nearby creatures, the more water in between your camera and subject, the softer the subject will be.

CAIRNS!!!
The Great Barrier Reef stretches more than 2,300km along the coast of Queensland's coastline, begins at the tip of Cape York peninsula in the north and extending down to Bundaberg in the south. Almost 6 days on the road we have finally arrived at Cairns, getting our first real taste of the Great Barrier Reef! Cairns is more commercial with hectic tourist scene, heard Port Douglas is more sophisticated and upmarket, i have not been there so can't comment much what you are likely to do from there.
Places of Interest: Diving at the Outer Reef, Esplanade Boardwalk, Daintree Discovery Centre, Kuranda Rainforest Tour, Green Island, Fitzroy Island, Lady Heron Island, Cape Tribulation (where Reef meets the Rainforest) or just chill out.
Photography Tips: One of the biggest challenges in photography is managing the light in your scene. Contrast is absolutely tough to manage on bright days, a graduated neutral density filter (ND grads) will be useful in manoeuvre these kind of situation to balance between dark foreground and bright background or vice versa.

Europcar allows us to return the rental car a day late without additional cost, we returned the rental car at Europcar Cairns City, it's just a 7 minutes walk to Reef Fleet Terminal where all GBR tours or cruises depart.
We departed from Reef Fleet Terminal (Cairns) it took about 90 minutes from terminal to the Outer Reef. The boat will dock at a giant floating platform - pontoon which become your home for the day. Here in the Outer Reef (pontoon), you can have buffet lunch, take a fresh shower, check out the underwater observatory, go on tours in semi-submersible, snorkel, dive and helmet dive. (iPhone photo)
We couldn't take any picture at all while we were diving, i'll dwell on "the why" next, that's me snorkelling at the Outer Reef after our dive.
So, like every beloved tourists, i bought an underwater casing for my phone hoping to document life underwater, after a serious chain of research, here, here and here a 4.7 rating on Amazon, i've finally decided to invest in the Vansky Floatable Waterproof Case Dry Bag. It's probably one of the worst investment i've made in my life. It's an absolutely nightmare to manoeuvre, the touch on the buttons was almost impossible in the water. It couldn't register when i pressed the icons or picture buttons and i often had to take it out of water while snorkelling in order to adjust it. It was aggravating! Another couple had hard plastic cases on the outside to control the icons, and they have no problem manoeuvring underwater. If i have to do this again, i won't trust the review from MacWorld, Wisebread, read only the bad reviews on Amazon, and i'll get those hard plastic casing type or a go-pro. (iPhone photo)

Diving, snorkelling at the Outer Reef will take up most of your day, you'll arrived back at Cairns in the evening. We took a stroll along the Esplanade Boardwalk, spent the night chilling by the coast and dinner over at Pedro's Pizza! Love it!
We head over to Reef Fleet Terminal again on the next morning, escape to Fitzroy Island! A tropical island on the Great Barrier Reef located just 45 minutes by high-speed ferry from Cairns' Reef Fleet Terminal.
Spend your day doing as much or as little as you please; relax on the beach, swim and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, take a glass-bottom boat tour, islands hopping... We explored the island by foot, we did the summit hike (approx. 2 hrs), the route to the summit is pretty easy with the self-guided booklet provided by the resort.

Gentle tips in getting the sensible-priced mineral water - the same 1.5 litre mineral water can cost VND8.5k in chained market, but overly priced at VND20k in local sundry/grocery store. Spend wisely.
Transportation - Taxi from Hanoi Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi Town can be a serious rip-off, they will charge you not least than VND530k-650k, we got ourself a GrabCar (Fixed Rate) costed us only VND300k. Overnight train for 4 beds VIP Berth will cost you approximately USD84 for the whole cabin, to and fro, ours are included in the Sapa Tour. Overnight train from Hanoi will get you to Lao Cai Railway terminal, you need to take a minibus (approx. 50 min winding ride) to Sapa Town, and of course, ours are included in Sapa Tour, to and fro. From Sapa Town onwards, we covered most of the ground by foot, at the end of our trekking trip at Su Pan Village, we were ferry back to Sapa Town with minibus - arranged by Sapa Tour.
Best time to visit - Paddy Planting (April), Paddy Harvesting (August-September)
Terraced Paddy Fields shimmered in the distance, as water buffaloes ploughed through the soggy field. The towering Hoang Lien Son mountain range lay shrouded in mist while clusters of bamboo huts sprawled across its foothills - this is Sapa.

ONE DAY IN HANOI TOWN
The excursion of hustle bustle city, the massive dosage of mental traffic, a beautiful mismatch of Vietnamese and French in the Old Quarter architecture. I'm not especially a big fan of Hanoi city, but the vibe and energy Hanoi Old Quarter is unique, home to the oldest neighbourhood in the city with history dated back to 13th century. The best place to observe the world go by sitting at their "outdoor" stools right on the walkway.

GATEWAY OF TREKKING BASE - SAPA
Established as a hill station by the French in 1922, Sapa today is the northern Vietnam's premier trekking base to the plunging valley. Spectacular views emerging on clear days, with mountains towering above on all sides, views of this epic scenery are often subdued by thick mist rolling across the peaks. I was actually expecting a quaint alpine town, but not quite, the Sapa's French colonial villas that once fell into despair during wars has now overwhelmed by modern tourism development and mushroomed haphazardly.

Photography Tips: You won't quite see the massive plunging terrace valley yet, Sapa is very much a town where you can capture Street at their local market, and landscape photography over at Cat Cat Village.

The tour agency arranged a minibus from Cat Cat Village back to Sapa town, check-in to hotel and have our evening rest. There's hardly a nightlife scene in Sapa but there are pubs and restaurants you can enjoy a beer or drink but mostly close around 10pm. There are also local street foods around most of the corner in Sapa town, cater for the locals.
TO THE HIDDEN VILLAGES OF SAPA
I've long heard about the beautiful valley and the ethnic groups who inhabit this region - and it didn't disappoint. We experienced Vietnam's backcountry, stayed in a local's home, trailed the Muong Hoa Valley treks - into the hidden villages of Sapa.
Terraced paddy fields are slopes claimed from nature for cultivation in hilly or mountainous areas. Created by weathered granite rock and mountain cliffs often stock water, the local hill tribes grow rice and establish terraced paddy fields, one after another, from the foot to the nearly top of mountains. Generations to generations of them have made the terraced paddy fields as we see today.
Places of Interest: Muong Huo Valley, Ta Van Village, Giang Ta Chai Village and Su Pan Village
Photography Tips: Every year in April, the hill tribes will water their fields and prepare for new crop, the surface of terraced fields shine like mirror reflecting the contrast of reddish brown soil, deep blue sky and the green of surrounding forests. In June-July, the terraced paddy fields with full grown paddy rice spread the green out to the entire valley. August-September, is when all terraced paddy fields ripe, paint the valley in gold, like a golden silk scarves flying over in the wind above green mountain ranges, making the valley astonishingly beautiful.

Paddy was harvested back in September, however, the view, still fascinating!
Sapa's Muong Hoa Valley spreads over 4 km length, 2 km width with at least 159 stones.

It takes about 5 hours trek across the valley, tracing Muong Hoa River, through its terraced fields and passing hamlets of minority hill tribes in Muong Hoa Valley.
Arrived at the Ta Van Village, at 1,000 meter altitude and home to for H'mong, Zao, Giay minority hill tribes who have been working on the sloping land and living their own way of life for hundred of years.

Dinner and rice wine prepared by our host, they speak a little English but super friendly! The Giay tribe are a small ethnic group in Sapa, around 30k people who are concentrated in the northern part of mountains. Giay Hill Tribe is easily distinguish by their traditional dress decorated by part of the neck and shirt buttons, setting aside more ornaments, a bit like a Cheongsam top.
THE HIDDEN TRAIL TO GIANG TA CHAI VILLAGE
The next morning, we started our journey at 6.30am, to avoid the soaring sun. We trekked up and down through the hidden treks of several small mountains and villages, and got us into a bamboo forest, much like an entrance to Giang Ta Chai Village. We are unable to visit the Giang Ta Chai waterfall due to the dry season.

Photography Tips: The easy assumption is when shooting landscape, is to use wide angle lens. They naturally give you the widest view, depth of field and allow you to get the full landscape into the frame. Sometimes, you miss out the details to create a dramatic and not so touristy images. Consider to shoot with telephoto, focus in looking for leading lines that shape its character.

Overlooking the cascading terraced paddy fields crossing our path.
You'll get to witness the terraced paddy fields in different shade of colours all year round, we missed the harvest season by a week or two, but the views still breathtaking! Literally breathtaking after hours of hiking.
Crossing the Muong Hoa River up to the mountain is where Su Pan Village located, often being refer as "mountainous commune". Occupying the highland on the east side about 17km away from Sapa town. Kids of Red Zao Hill Tribe passing their time playing with sand under the rudimentary house built on rocky farmland.
We got back to Sapa town from the 2D1N trek earlier than anticipated. We rented 2 motorbikes to explore the northern part of Sapa town (towards Silver Waterfall), and rewarded with the ray of lights over the valley.
HALONG BAY
We took the overnight train from Lao Cai back to Hanoi town - arranged by the tour agency. Arrived at Hanoi 5am in the morning, dropped our backpacks at the pre-booked hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter, head out to Halong Bay tour. Despite the over-flocking tourists, i would never dissuade you from visiting Halong Bay, from geographical standpoint, Halong Bay is absolutely fascinating! On a 1-day trip you'll only scratch the surface, it took us 8 hours on the bus just to commute to and fro Halong Bay - we have merely 3 hours exploring Halong Bay. So, if you have enough time, it's highly recommend to take a 2D1N tour instead of a day tour.
Places of Interest: Floating Village, Cat Ba Island, Hidden Grottos and Caves, Kayak between the karsts limestone.
Photography Tips: Photographing Halong Bay is easy and opportunities are everywhere. But that also means, it's overly well documented by numerous of great photographers. You must've seen images of brilliant dark maroon and wooden boats floating by dozen through the blissful still water - this doesn't happen! You should probably temper your expectation. Find your own perspective in capturing the most photographed place - i have my 85mm on most of the time.
[IMPORTANT NOTE] Before booking for your Halong Bay Tour, please make sure you source for reliable and reputable tour agency, i would highly recommend "The SinhTourist". But don't be confused by the fake Sinh Tour/Sinh Tourist...

We left Halong Bay at the nick of setting sun, continuing the gruelling 4 hours bus journey back to Hanoi town.

It's okay to just indulge every once a travel, as usual, we splurged on our last meal in Vietnam. Possibly the best street food in Hanoi! The workers here don't speak English, here's how you order your foods, basically just walk to where foods are, pick the foods you want into the basket, they will cook for you in perfection - then place the perfectly barbecue-d foods on the hotpot, to keep it warm. Highly recommended - Thai Dat.

Wasn't too fond of the lawless traffic in Hanoi during the daylight mainly due to the overwhelming air pollution; The hustle bustle city transformed as sun sets, i think the night properly defined Hanoi - an amazing city with colourful characters. Big fans of the mountain ranges in Sapa Valley, love every single bits of it, impressive physical landscape underlies the terrace-craftsmanship of over thousands of years!

New Zealand remains one of the greatest and most spectacular countries in the world. ONE NIGHT IN AUCKLAND
The big tourist city, i'm not overly fond of Auckland, maybe it's too fast to judge as i barely scraped the surface of Auckland with just one night. It reminded me a lot of Melbourne with the streets alike, but only that Auckland is much smaller without the City Tram. There are probably fun nightlife in Auckland, so i wouldn't strike off the city but wouldn't spend much time here either because there are many more exciting and beautiful places in New Zealand to explore! From Auckland to Rotorua, we detoured to Tauranga, and did a trail around the sacred mountain Mauao (Mt. Maunganui). The trail will bring you from north to the west side of Mauao, where it offers great view of open ocean and Matakana Island.
Places of interest: Auckland Street, Sky Tower, Otara Flea Market, Auckland Domain, Auckland Harbour, Tauranga Mauao Trail.
Photography Tips: A place for Cityscape and Street Photography. Here you can find architecture patterns and lines of high-rise buildings and interesting people along the street. Look for leading lines to create strong sense of coherence in otherwise chaotic scene.

ENTERING THE "ROTTEN EGG" OF ROTORUA
As we infiltrated the city of Rotorua, a rather pungent odour erupts quickly. Truth be told, it smells like rotten eggs! It grows on you, of course not in an uncomfortable fungal way. It is the smell of the sulphur geothermal activities in the region, the intense presence of beneficial minerals and the readily available natural remedies that the mother nature offers.
Places of interest: Lake Rotorua, Redwood Forest (Whakarewarewa), Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Park, Moari Culture.
Photography Tips: Traveling from Auckland to Rotorua will probably take you half a day, arriving at Lake Rotorua at noon might not be an ideal exposure for the reflective lake. Consider to visit Redwood (Whakarewarewa) in the noon-afternoon and Lake Rotorua in the evening. Wai-O-Tapu is on the same path from Rotorua towards Tongariro, you can visit the geothermal park ideally the next morning.

CROSSING TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK
From Rotorua to Tongariro National Park, you'll pass by Lake Taupo - a quiet version of Queenstown. If you have enough time, it's definitely worth a 2-night stay. We only manage to catch lunch here before heading to Tongariro National Park - the first World Heritage Site in New Zealand, home to rugged diverse landscape, volcanic peaks and lush native bush.
Places of interest: Lake Taupo, Alpine Crossing (all day), Mt. Ruapehu Crater Lake (all day), Taranaki Lookout, Tupapakurua Falls track, Whakapapa Nature Walk, Tawhai Falls.
Photography Tips: Tongariro offers a beautiful view of the snow mountain, however it's highly dependent on weather; it fogged up the whole day during my visit. Within the national park, with many options from short to long treks, you'll be spoilt for choices. You can pick the route most suitable to your schedule. The long 7.5 hrs (all day) trek Tongariro Alpine Crossing is highly recommended if time permits. In additional, you can photograph the snow mountain at Mt. Ruapehu Ski and Snowboard. A Grad-Natural-Density filter OR exposure-bracketing will be useful in capturing these tricky white snow and bright sky.

FROM THE NORTH TO SOUTH - WELLINGTON TO NELSON
Yes, Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand, with magic of its own architectures and eclectic vibes of the city lifestyle. We spent a night in Wellington to catch an early morning ferry transfer from North Island (Wellington) to the magical South Island (Picton). Nelson is an hour drive away from Picton, one of the sunniest place in the country, filled with cafes, restaurants and pubs. At Nelson, we did a short hike to the Centre of New Zealand - overlooking the Cityscape of Nelson.
Places of interest: Abel Tasman National Park, Centre of New Zealand, Nelson Farmers Market.
Photography Tips: Tongariro to Wellington is a long 5 hours drive. You probably wouldn't want to rush it with the winding (frosty if winter) road condition. Do take your sweet time and consider a little detour to Waikawa Beach. There you will be able to capture the beautiful scenery as the sun sets. At the capital of NZ, consider a trek up to Mt. Victoria lookout point for Cityscape overview or just explore the city by foot for Street Photography. At Nelson, a short hike to the Centre of New Zealand will take you around 45 minutes. Get your tripod ready for Evening/Night Cityscape, you might get lucky with a Milkyway shot. Nelson also serves as a gateway to Abel Tasman National Park, it worth a visit if time permits.

THE GREAT COAST OF GREYMOUTH
From Nelson to Greymouth, you'll pass by Buller Gorge Swing Bridge. We did the shorter treks around the gorge, that brought us into the beautiful woods. Thereafter, followed the coastline route towards Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks). It wasn't a fruitful stop as most of the view points were obstructed by the overgrown grass, hardly can find the right spot for photography. We cruised along the Great Coast Road towards Greymouth, stopped by a view point after Slow Bay curves for sunset view of the Apostles.
Other than the "no light zones" at Lake Tekapo and Mt. Cook, Greymouth is one of the darker cities you can find. Pass by Shantytown on your right, continue on until you find a location dark enough overlooking the Milkyway. Found mine in the middle of the road.

Photography Tips: To shoot Milkyway, set your camera to Manual, turn to the largest aperture your wide lens can go, start with ISO3200, and follow the shutter 500 Rules to guesstimate your shutter speed (500/lens focal length); for example, i was using a 20mm lens, my optimal shutter speed will 500/20=25 seconds.

THE BEST TOWN IN NZ! QUEENSTOWN
Everybody seems to like Queenstown, seriously, everybody! Not hard to see why, a phenomenal city built around Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. There are so much vibes in the city that attract tourists from all around the world. Queenstown, a focal point for adventures like ski, skydive, bungy... We have initially planned for one night but ended up staying for 3 nights. It was definitely worth it.
Places of interest: Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier, Queenstown Hill, Queenstown Gondola, Glenorchy, Cardrona Ski Area, Milford Sound.
Photography Tips: From Greymouth, drop by Fox Glacier for a short trek. In Queenstown, take a hike to Queenstown Hills (3 hrs returns) from Belfast Street, you'll be rewarded with a vantage point of Queenstown Cityscape. Alternatively, you can jump on the Skyline Gondola, for higher dramatic view of Queenstown. To capture snow mountain across the lake, drive 45 minutes from Queenstown to a historical small town, Glenorchy and take the swamp trail around the lake. If you're up for snow activities, Cardrona Ski & Snowboarding is just an hour and half away from Queenstown. There, you will be rewarded with a majestic landscape of the snow mountain.

LAKE TEKAPO
Nestled between the Two Thumb Range and Mt. John in the heart of Southern Alps, Lake Tekapo never cease to impress. Picture perfect turquoise lake, snow-capped mountains; this simple recipe has created a beauty so rare at Tekapo, with landscape so striking it deflates your breath. The same reason also made Lake Tekapo, one of the most photographed places in the region. Driving from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo, you'll pass by Lake Pukaki, a place worth the stop for a different perspective of the frequently featured turquoise lake and snow mountains. Lake Tekapo also serves as a gateway to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, definitely a must visit. Take a short trek (3 hrs return) to Hooker Valley Track, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of Mt. Cook over Hooker Lake.

Photography Tips: Take a short walk from popular attractions, find your own perspective in capturing the most photographed place. Composition for photograph and painting is often similar, both emphasise on 3 elements of visual mass plane to highlight on space, depth and the concept of foreground, mid-ground and background.

CHRISTCHURCH THE GARDEN CITY
With 2011 earthquake still haunting the town, most of the attractions are fenced up for restoration. Christchurch is a city featured with beautifully sculpted gardens and parks reminiscent the Victorian England. Here, we explored the city by foot for Cityscape and Street Photography, botanic garden, art exhibition and vast museum are great options.
Places of interest: Antarctic Center, Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Lyttelton Farmers Market, Museum, Library, Street, Re:START Mall, New Regent Street.
Photography Tips: On the street is all about the moment it clicks. As it is vital not to miss the decisive moment, I always keep my camera on Aperture mode, Auto-ISO. For most will prefer f8 and be there, i always keep it on large aperture in shooting street, couldn't resist the Bokeh.
